You don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to enjoy the best spa experiences. You only need to book a Marival Armony stay in Mexico.

Traveling and spa days are two of my favorite things. When I can combine both, I do. The Marival Armony Luxury Resort & Suites, located in Punta Mita Mexico, gave me the chance to travel around the world with spa treatments.

Melange World Spa, located in the resort, offers nine spa treatments that are inspired by different cultures. One treatment is based on a Russian Banya, a traditional Russian bathhouse. Another is influenced by Mexico’s prehispanic Temazcal steambaths. Although I was only able to visit India and Thailand during my trip, I am eager to return in order to try the other treatments.

Melange World Spa

Melange World Spa provides traditional massage services, like any spa. These include Swedish and therapeutic massages as well as mani-pedis or facials. Marival Armony, however, wanted to be different and sent an ex-spa director to try out unique treatments. Antonio Ortiz is the marketing director of Marival Group. He says that they didn’t want to replicate these treatments, but rather pay tribute to them.

Ortiz says, “It is a small taste of the original.” “We want our guests to try the original.”

You feel transported to a different country when you enter one of our signature treatment rooms. The massive wooden table used in the India treatment area is an original massage table from the country. Indian-inspired accents add to the ambience of the room. A giant copper tub next to the window looks out over the Mexican jungle.

The decor isn’t all that’s global. Each signature treatment starts with a foot soak, a snack from the country of origin, and a beverage. Each treatment is unique, but you will feel relaxed after trying any of them.

India Experience

The first treatment I tried was based on Ayurvedic techniques. The staff asked me to fill out a questionnaire during check-in about my sleep patterns, digestion and personality traits. This information was used by the therapist to create a custom blend of oil and customize my experience.

As the therapist washed off my feet, I tried a Chaitini, a truffle of chocolate, and some tomato chutney. Although I did not get many Indian flavors, I still appreciated the gesture. The foot-washing only took a minute so I barely had time to taste each one before the therapist told me to go to the table.

The wooden massage table was not comfortable at first, despite the cushion. It wasn’t as comfortable as the plush tables I am used to. It was authentic, but I still loved it. The Shirodhara drip over my third eye was also a great experience, as were the craniosacral and craniosacral treatments. The full-body massage, while similar to others, was exactly what I needed. The experience concluded with a 15 minute soak in the copper tub.

Turkey Experience

The second day, I was eager to experience the Turkey Experience. I’d heard of hammams before. The India Experience began the same way, with a footbath and small bites. This time they were served with espresso coffee with anise. The flavors were not as authentic as I hoped and I could barely taste them before treatment started.

This time, I was taken to a steam room en suite where I exfoliated and steamed. The therapist told me to switch to the massage table after 10 minutes by knocking on the door of the steam room. The body massage took about 50 minutes, and involved sweeping movements as well as stretching my limbs. I was so relaxing that I forgot a lot and confused the orange scent with peppermint.

Some hammams include a bubble rinse or massage. Melange’s treatment concludes with a bubble-bath, but not any bubble-bath. The bubbles were so plentiful that I was able to sculpt different shapes from them. The Turkey Experience was an excellent way to finish and I wished I had more time.

Other Global Spa Experiences

Melange World Spa has nine treatments that are inspired by other cultures. You can also book these treatments:

Italy experience: This treatment is inspired by the Vendemmia Wine Festival and includes a grape-stomping session and a relaxing jacuzzi in a barrel filled with wine and salts made from grape seeds. The massage includes grape seed oil and champagne cream. It also includes a wine-tasting.

Russia Experience The treatment begins with a foot massaging while you nibble salmon and drink vodka. It continues with 15-minutes in a Russian banya (dry sauna). You’ll then enjoy a stretching-based sports massage.

Mexico Experience A guava margarita and small bites kick-start this treatment. Temazcal is what makes it special. Marival Armony recreates the pre-Hispanic experience of a sweat lodge with aromatic herbs, aloe vera and yucca exfoliation, and a steam bath. The treatment is completed with a body wrap made of blue agave, a facial exfoliation and a 15 minute massage.

Thailand experience: This Thai herbal massage will transport to Thailand. The massage begins with a foot soak, followed by cocktails and appetizers. It then jumps right into the massage, as the therapist uses herbal compresses and stretches to relax your tense muscle.

Each treatment includes a small snack and a cocktail that features the flavors of that country. Photo by Teresa Bitler

More Amazing Experiences

Bali Experience The Bali Experience is a sensory experience that focuses on aromas. After the footbath, cocktail and small bites your massage therapist will give you an aromatic body scrub. You’ll then enjoy a warm-mud massage to hydrate your skin.

Japan Experience This Shiatsu-inspired therapy may be the perfect way to reduce stress. The massage uses acupressure to apply pressure along the body’s meridians, acupuncture points and improve health.

America experience: This treatment is based on the fast-paced American lifestyle and includes a facial, a pedicure and a manicure. Each of these treatments are performed by an expert.

Discovering Marival Armony

Marival Armony, a family-owned resort, is located on the Rivieranayarit to the north of Puerto Vallarta. The resort is a family-friendly alternative to the Marival Distinct Luxury residences. You can choose to stay at Marival Armony with an all-inclusive package or pay as you go.

I am not a traveler who enjoys all-inclusive packages. When I travel, I’m not a fan of staying on-property. Marival Armony was a wonderful place to stay. The rooms and infinity pool offer stunning ocean views.

There are also many quiet areas to relax, including small pools and secluded seating areas. There’s something for everyone, from live music in the bars to sound-bathing.

Marival Armony is not just about the jacuzzi. You can rent out a cabana for $300 a day, complete with your own private jacuzzi. The waitstaff will deliver food and drinks on your request. You want to add a little romance? You can arrange for a floating brunch in a pool with fresh fruit, coffee, mimosas and a variety of hot dishes.

Marival Armony: A Visit is a Must

The closest airport is Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Marival Armony is located about 20 miles away. (Expect about a 40-minute drive.) It’s not unusual for it to rain in the evenings during the summer. Bring a lightweight jacket and your swimsuit at any time of year. The best time to go is in the spring, but you can also see whales migrating along the coast between December and February. The resort can arrange whale-watching trips or other tours all year round. Plan to stay at Marival Armony for at least four or even five days in Mexico. You could go for a weekend trip, but you will need at least one week to experience all the spa treatment.
